Our shop is different from others you may have used, containing a range of professional level machines and hand tools that require instruction and practice as you set to work. Or maybe you're entirely new to woodworking. (Welcome!) Either way, in this class you'll learn to take rough lumber and turn it into square and true boards, to use a wide range of machines – jointer, planer, bandsaw, table saw, drill press and router table – and to sand and apply finish. You'll leave with a beautiful cutting board and the skills to safely and capably navigate Mission Community Woodshop.

Milling
Join us to build a beautiful hardwood bench and to learn some foundational joinery techniques -- hand-cut dovetails and mortise and tenon. Master these, and the world is your oyster, as you'll be adept with saws and chisels and equipped to take on a range of future projects.

Bring your favorite 8"x10" print, and we'll provide the rest -- wood, glass, backing with stand and professional guidance. And prepare to use a range of machines and hand tools -- table saw, drill press, router table as well as hand planes and chisels. You'll leave with a beautiful frame made of walnut or cherry.

Box making is an age-old practice with a variety of styles and techniques. Many of us at MCW have been making boxes lately, but few as well as Ben, who designed this class. Participants will construct a beautiful box out of walnut, with wrapped grain edges, mitered corners (possibly with splines), contrasting liner and a lid that fits snugly.

Participants will be involved in the process of making an Appalachian style ladder back chair frame using traditional hand tool techniques and a limited number of machines. Students will receive hands-on instruction in splitting native green tanoak logs, shaping parts on a shave horse with a drawknife and spokeshave, fitting joinery and steam bending. Each student will leave the class with a completed chair frame. Hemp or cotton webbing will be supplied for seat weaving at home.

Have a project in mind but not the facilities to do it? We can provide the latter and all the expert advice you might need to successfully build the piece you've been wanting to make. Participants must demonstrate proficiency with various woodworking tasks—jointing, planing, ripping, crosscutting, for starters—in order to participate and will be asked to submit a sketch in advance.

The class offering is the result of a lunchtime conversation among a handful of MCW members. We saw a sculptural plant stand and immediately fell in love with it. Participants will use sapele or cherry and the project will involve using acrylic templates and a host of machines in the shop—band saw, table saw, router and Festool domino for joinery. The class will also include significant instruction and practice in applying finishes -- shellac, oil, water based poly and hard wax -- providing a skill that will be useful in future woodworking projects.

This class is an opportunity to build a traditional bent wood oval box in the Shaker style. The construction uses stream bent strips of wood, tacked together around a bottom and top form. Born before the time of plastic food containers, these boxes were used for the storage of dry goods. But you can use your box for whatever you like, and it makes a great gift.

This timeless Shaker table is a great project for early and more experienced woodworkers alike. Hand Tools
We have our member Tait to thank for inspiring this class. You'll get to chose cherry, maple or walnut to make this attractive stool (or plant stand?). There is considerable band saw work to make the round seat and octagonal legs. A variety of hand tools are then used to shape the pieces and ensure a tight fit for the wedged tenons. A fun, satisfying project!
