Woodworking and Teaching Fellowship at Mission Community Woodshop

 

MCW is thrilled to announce its inaugural, nine-month fellowship designed to support emerging furniture makers and aspiring woodworking teachers in our nonprofit shop.

The MCW fellow will join a vibrant community of craftspeople in our shared space in San Francisco’s Mission District, with access to professional-grade machines, supportive shopmates and experienced mentors. Fellows will have ample opportunity to grow as teachers and furniture makers while also learning to run a woodshop. The fellowship includes nine hours of supported teaching duties per week; a workbench in our bright, beautiful San Francisco shop; ample lumber, project and hand-tool storage; and a stipend of up to $3000 per month for those who demonstrate need. Ideal candidates will have strong woodworking skills, whether developed through professional experience, recent education in furniture making or both. They will also demonstrate a keen interest in teaching—a central part of the MCW fellowship.

 

Notes:

*In addition to teaching, fellows are expected to be in the shop at least twenty hours per week for a total of around thirty hours.
*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
*We anticipate the fellowship beginning on December 1, 2026, but there is some flexibility.
*We strongly encourage applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in woodworking spaces.
*Fellowship will culminate in a public display of completed furniture pieces with the larger MCW community invited to attend.
