About Us
MCW is a nonprofit, sliding scale woodshop offering classes and memberships. We also work with schools, community organizations and businesses providing group experiences designed around their goals and wishes.
At the center of all we do is our sliding scale for both students and members. Some pay more, others less, and we ask that if our lowest class price is still a stretch students reach out for additional discounts. To date we have not turned anyone away.
These programs cost money, and we lean heavily on the generous support of our wider community. Their donations make possible a range of programs and lower the bar for participation in classes and memberships. Thank you for considering a donation to MCW!

The founders
Andrew Salverda and Dan Matz, the founders, are long-time friends and teachers (Urban School, SF Friends, Randall Museum, Nueva). Other members are professionals and amateurs, surfers and poets, tech entrepreneurs and professors.
Together we are building a tight-knit, inclusive community of good-natured woodworkers – accomplished and amateur alike – to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.
Integral to this vision is our commitment to making woodworking accessible to a wide range of San Franciscans. We promise to help you get comfortable working on our machines, to guide you as you build your first projects, and to support you with flexible tuition and bench rental fees as our finances allow.
