Upcoming Classes

This class will teach you a  range of satisfying carving skills and will provide instruction on  hand-tools such as gouges, rasps, and carving knives. Discover the joys  of carving as we sculpt a beautiful cherry spoon over three evenings  filled with music and friends.

Have a project in mind but not the facilities to do it? We can provide the latter and all the expert advice you might need to successfully build the piece you've been wanting to make. Participants must demonstrate proficiency with various woodworking tasks—jointing, planing, ripping, crosscutting, for starters—in order to participate and will be asked to submit a sketch in advance.

Prerequisites: Shaker table class (or equivalent)

Whether you’re a veteran woodworker or novice (welcome!), our shop differs from others you may have encountered, with a range of professional-level machines and hand tools that require instruction and practice. In this class, you’ll use a wide range of machines – jointer, planer, bandsaw, tablesaw, drill press and router table – to take a rough piece of lumber to turn it into a square and true board that can then be shaped, sanded and finished. You’ll leave with a beautiful cutting board and the skills to safely and capably navigate the Mission Community Woodshop.

Participants will be involved in the process of making an Appalachian style ladder back chair frame using traditional hand tool techniques and a limited number of machines. Students will receive hands-on instruction in splitting native green tanoak logs, shaping parts on a shave horse with a drawknife and spokeshave, fitting joinery and steam bending. Each student will leave the class with a completed chair frame. Hemp or cotton webbing will be supplied for seat weaving at home.

This timeless Shaker table is a great project for early and more experienced woodworkers alike. You'll learn to mill lumber so it's flat and square, to make sturdy mortise and tenon joints, to cut tapers and to join boards -- a host of skills that will prepare you for a broad range of future projects.

Brush making offers endless possibilities for creativity — sculpting and shaping a small block of wood before drilling and tying the tampico fibers. Join us for this three session class where you’ll learn how to safely use various machines (bandsaw, drill press, spindle sander, disc sander) and a range of hand tools (rasps, files, chisels, shaves, hand planes) to make a beautiful, unique, and useful (!) brush of your own.

Bring your favorite 8"x10" print, and we'll provide the rest -- wood, glass, backing with stand and professional guidance. And prepare to use a range of machines and hand tools -- table saw, drill press, router table as well as hand planes and chisels. You'll leave with a beautiful frame made of walnut or cherry.
