LADDER BACK CHAIR
6 consecutive days
Timeless bent wood chair
Participants will be involved in the process of making an Appalachian style ladder back chari frame using traditional hand tool techniques and a limited number of machines. Students will receive hands-on instruction in splitting native green tanoak (Lithocarpus Densiflorus) logs, shaping parts on a shave horse with a drawknife and spokeshave, fitting joinery and steam bending. Each student will leave the class with a completed chair frame. Hemp or cotton webbing will be supplied for seat weaving at home, a process that will be demonstrated on the sixth day.
